The Writing curriculum at Kingswood Parks inspires our children to be young authors, creating a range of quality narrative and non-narrative texts.
The theme and genre of writing is derived from a key text, chosen to inform, excite and engage. The objectives of the National Curriculum are taught to ensure that skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar are embedded and transferred across all writing. ‘Talk for Writing’ strategies are used throughout the school to design a sequence of purposeful and challenging lessons.
Opportunities for role play and discussion, along with the reading and critiquing of model texts, provide the information and experience the children require to master a text type. We challenge the children to take pride in their writing and present their work beautifully.
Fine motor skills and handwriting are taught from the Early Years and children from KS1 are encouraged to use joined script. Spelling is a key skill children need to practise. We teach the rules of spelling at school which are then consolidated at home through weekly spelling homework. The children have the opportunity to apply their new spelling knowledge through the playing of weekly games, dictated sentences and spelling tests.
